Blow Yourself Up

In the early 1970s, an offer to enlarge any photograph to poster size gained significant popularity, and this iconic advertisement was prominently featured in numerous newspapers and magazines. The studio was located on 23rd Street in Manhattan, directly opposite the School of Visual Arts, where I was a student at the time. One day, as I was en route to school, I noticed a strong crosswind that had scattered numerous internegatives used to print these posters across the sidewalk. I gathered an armful of the negatives and proceeded across the street to the darkroom at SVA to create contact sheets. To my astonishment, I discovered a peculiar and enigmatic realm that remains largely unexplored. As you examine the photographs, you will encounter numerous ordinary individuals simply attempting to preserve that fleeting KODAK moment.
