New York Dolls made headlines for a 1973 Halloween Bash at the Waldorf Astoria that caused $25,000 in damage. More impressive than their jaw dropping looks or memorable music, was the die-hard, debauched scene that embraced them, largely through word of mouth.
DON HILL (club owner): The Dolls at the Waldorf was the best rock party I’ve ever seen – lots of chaos without anyone getting hurt. Rex Reed judged the costumes, and the mingling of the rich, beautiful people in the lobby with crazy Dolls fans with dildos hanging around their necks and whatever, was just outstanding. They were a blues-oriented glam band with the hippest crowd in the world. Their whole thing was the crowd. In a way, the scene was bigger than the band. (2005)
